Summer Protégés

Coming up in the business as a young makeup artist, I learned the most when I was on the job. No amount of fashion magazine flipping or experimenting with eye shadow on friends got me the same experience as when I assisted more seasoned makeup artists. Sure, sometimes I felt like I was in way over my head. But that’s why I tell all the college students who come to our offices for the summer to learn the ropes: Have no fear. And if you are scared, just pretend you’re not afraid.

This summer, in particular, I was so impressed with “the BB dozen”, and what they took away from their internship experience—it made me totally proud. On our last day, we got together to discuss the highlights; so many of them talked about the friendly, family-like culture of the office and the excitement they felt working closely with upper management colleagues in a casual way. Of course, they loved the photo shoots and events they got to attend (some even got to go to the QVC studios!), but mostly they liked how they got to work on meaningful assignments and were more than just your average “gofer”.

For their last project, I asked them to work on something that’s very meaningful to me—the Everything Bobbi blog. They wanted to be even more involved, so we let them “own” this entire post; they put it together from start to finish and interviewed each other for their final farewell. Enjoy!

  1. I love that you and your company gives an opportunity to young college students considering working in the art of
the makeup application..but what about emptynesters who love makeup and fashion and would like an opportuntiy too ?
I am not in the minority..there are many woman like myself who have a passion for this as well and are in a place
to start over again..it seems like an we do not have many options and an opportunity lost for many companies.
