Father’s Day is this weekend, and I’ve been thinking about all of the awesome dads I know—from my husband, Steven Plofker, to my dear friend Yogi Berra. My own father, Joe Brown, has been a constant source of support and love—teaching me how to keep things in perspective, how to choose positivity, and how to live a passionate, creative life.
I asked some of my favorite fathers (and grandfathers) to share the best advice that they’ve given their kids over the years. From playing fair to playing sports, we got some great answers.
Take a look, and take notes—it’s good stuff.
XO,
Bobbi

I like to give advice about things that have worked well for me. I would tell my kids, “You are in charge of your attitude. Every morning take a deep breath, look into the mirror and say to yourself, ‘You can have a good day or a bad day and you have the power to decide which it will be.’ You can’t change some things but you, alone, are in charge of your attitude.” You’ll end up with a lot more good days.

“Play as many sports as you can and remember to have fun. Always respect your opponent and play fair.”
Donald Robertson, Artist
“The greatest piece of advice I’ve given my kids is when you are meeting someone its key to have a FIRM HANDSHAKE !!!! Look them in the eyes, say “hello ” (my name is..), the opposite of all of these drives me nuts. After that they can split…”
John Demsey, Group President, The Estee Lauder Companies
“Be who you are. Love what you do. It all works out in the end…”
Judge Ernest Booker
“I have daughters, so my advice to them has always been, let reputation be your compass for how you live your life. Kindness, compassion, integrity and love for others should guide you.”
Jeff Raider, Co-Founder of Harry’s Shave
“Sometimes the simplest advice is the best — my kids are both younger than 3, and I always encourage them that they can do anything that they really put their mind to.”
