Photography book, Diverse Beauty by Alexi Lubomirski comes out in October, with all proceeds benefiting the humanitarian charity, Concern Worldwide. The England-born, New York-based photographer has shot looks for the Bobbi Brown team. He established his name working in the fashion industry, shooting for editorial titans like Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue and GQ.
Lubomirski has pointed his lense at likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lopez and Charlize Theron, but it wasn’t until he worked with Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o that he recognized the homogeneity of the subjects he’d been hired to shoot professionally. Often, when Lubomirski submitted more diverse lists of models he was interested in shooting, the responses would include things like “We love her, but…”, “her hair is a problem… “, “She is too dark” or “She is too light to make a statement.” Disappointing, but it inspired Lubomirski to raise awareness about this issue.
In Diverse Beauty, Lubomirski’s goal is to push these underrepresented ladies into the limelight of fashion media. Designed by Takaaki Matsumoto, the book features photos of stunning women of every color, size, age and sexual orientation, celebrating beauty in a multi-dimensional manner, a stark contrast to the standards so omniscient in Western media. Nyong’o is featured, along with Rashida Jones, Salma Hayek, Demi Lovato, Anja Rubik, Chanel Iman, Beyonce, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and many more. Here’s to Lubomirski’s pretty powerful message. Check out the book when it hits shelves in the fall.
