Girl Rising

Girl Rising

Women can do anything. Run for president. Edit the New York Times. Become a Supreme Court Justice. Win a Nobel Prize. Change the world. But without an education, none of this would be possible. And the reality is, for many women in the developing world, school just isn’t an option.

Here are the facts:

  • 65 million girls around the world do not attend school.
  • Two-thirds of the 792 million illiterate adults in the world are female.
  • 14 million girls under 18 will be married this year. That’s 38 thousand today—or 13 girls in the last 30 seconds. When girls marry, their education almost always comes to an end.

I’ve worked with brilliant, powerful women my entire career, and I really believe that girls run the world. When I learned about the state of education for women, I knew I had to help make a change.

Enter Girl Rising, a global campaign that promotes a simple, critical truth: educating girls can break the cycle of poverty in just one generation. An educated girl can empower herself, lift her family out of poverty, help her community prosper, and change her country. This is more than just girl power. Girl Rising introduced me to some better facts: give a girl one extra year of education and she’ll earn 20% more as an adult. An educated mother is more than twice as likely to send her kids to school. We really can make a difference. So what better cause to lend the support of our Pretty Powerful Campaign for Women & Girls?

  1. Thanks to you Bobbi and to your whole team for making this incredible partnership a reality. The truth is so simple: educating girls will change the world. And that’s #prettypowerful. As always, you are on the cutting edge, looking ahead, imagining the world we want, not the world we have. Imagining what is beautiful. And real. With gratitude. Holly
